I was in La Crosse on Wednesday, Dec. 10, to attend the International Mountain Bike Association and Human Powered Trails Inc.’s meeting about La Crosse becoming a Ride Center. What I learned was that this is a worthwhile endeavor for people, businesses and government officials to support a project that would benefit them and the surrounding region.
Thursday afternoon, Larry, my friend from La Crosse, and I went snowshoeing on the multi-use trails developed on public land by Human Powered Trails in the bluffs overlooking La Crosse. We got to experience the beauty of the bluffs and to get some great exercise.
The slides presented by IMBA featured five areas in the country that they had helped to develop multi-use trails.
La Crosse was chosen because of the great topography of the bluffs, the paddling opportunity of the Mississippi and other rivers, and the public land in the surrounding region that would make it a tourist attraction.
I am a member of the Eau Claire Pie Riders, a summer road biking and winter walking group, and CORBA, the mountain biking group. The Pie Riders have enjoyed biking, hiking, snowshoeing and paddling in the La Crosse area.
I would hope that La Crosse and the surrounding region would take advantage of their natural assets so more people could enjoy them.
